Red white heart beads are made by individually winding clear red glass on a white core. This method was devised as a way of extending the use of expensive gold-based red glass, but the acceptance of this manufacturing style has created a class of beads known as 'white hearts'. Other external colours soon followed - green, blue, turquoise, yellow and orange. The large red white hearts in this necklace (7.5-8mm diameter) are only rarely found. The estimated date of manufacture of these Venetian beads is C. 1920. Length 48.5cm.
