These antique glass red whiteheart beads were created in Murano, Venice, in the early 1900s. They were traded into West Africa and across into Ethiopia in exchange for local treasures, and used in beaded clothing in south west Ethiopia. The silver pendant is unique to Ethiopia - it is a version of the Axum Cross from the Royal City of Axum in northern Ethiopia, the hooks on the lower section symbolic of the use of the cross in religious processions. The silver is largely derived from the 1780 Austrian Thaler coin, which was heavily used as coinage until the late 1800s. Christianity came to Ethiopia in 400AD from Egypt, and became of the country's key religious traditions.
